It’s been quite a while since I made a blog post, but I’m going to try to get back into posting. As some of you may know, I started college in August, which is the main reason why I haven’t been posting. I’m going to try to get into a routine next semester that allots time for me to work on my blog as well as keeping up with schoolwork, but we’ll see where that leads. For now, I just wanted to finish this post I started at the end of July. I’ve already put a lot of time and effort into it, so I don’t want to just scrap it. It’s essentially an overview/rating of the songs on my July 2022 Favorites playlist on Spotify. So, without further delay, let’s get into it!
About My Favorites Playlists
Since about March of 2019, I’ve been making monthly K-Pop favorites playlists on my Spotify. These playlists usually consist of my favorite new releases, new discoveries, or just old favorites I’m still listening to frequently. I do edit them throughout the month, but I tend to try not to remove any songs if I can help it. Most of the time the songs on my playlists are from artists I consider myself to be a stan (or fan) of, but sometimes they’re from other artists I’ve never heard of or don’t usually listen to. Sometimes, there are songs from artists outside of the world of K-Pop that simply feature a K-Idol. Nonetheless, every song has a K-Idol in it, at least in part. For the most part, the majority of the songs on my playlists consist some of the groups and artists mentioned in my Introduction to K-Pop post.

Songs By Artist
Nayeon (나연)

Im Nayeon is the oldest member of the girl group TWICE under JYP Entertainment. Twice debuted in 2015 after the finish of the survival show Sixteen. Nayeon had her solo debut on June 24, 2022 with her Mini album titled Im Nayeon.
POP!
This song is the title track (main song) of Nayeon’s solo debut mini album. Overall, it’s got a very bubbly and upbeat vibe to it. The chorus is very catchy, and it’s definitely gotten stuck in my head at least once a week since it came out. Nayeon’s voice is kind of nasally, but not in a bad way. It has a pretty unique sound, so that helps the song sound easier on the ears. Aside from the auditory aspects of this song, it also has a very cute choreography with it. I’ve definitely added it to my list of dances to learn, but so far, I only know the chorus hand motions.

No Problem feat. Felix (필릭스) of Stray Kids (스트레이 키즈)
This song is definitely my favorite on the album aside from the title track. While it may seem like I’m a bit biased to those of you who know Stray Kids is my favorite group, I promise I just genuinely enjoy the song. It’s a very soft, calming sort of love song. Not only that, but it’s also completely in English, so I didn’t have to look up translations to understand the lyrics, which is always nice.

aespa (에스파)

From left to right: Ning Ning, Karina, Winter, Giselle
aespa is a 4-member girl group under SM Entertainment. They debuted in 2020 and recently released their 2nd Mini Album Girls.
Life’s Too Short
This song was originally released as an English pre-release to their 2nd mini album, but it was also included on the album itself. Because it’s all in English, it was pretty easy for me to understand. The song itself is also very calming and nice to listen/sing along to.

Girls
This is the title track of aespa’s mini album Girls. It’s a pretty powerful song with a vibe that sort of says, “Hey, we’re girls and we can do anything.” The lyrics of the song sort of play into aespa’s A.I. universe theme, but they can also be applied to other things. I love the song’s feel, even though it took me a couple listens.

ICU (쉬어가도 돼)
I wasn’t sure if I’d like this song because aespa b-sides are a bit hit or miss for me, but I actually really like it. Its another softer, slower song like Life’s Too Short, and it’s very pretty. The lyrics make my heart feel a certain way, and that just makes me like the song even more.

KARD (카드)

From left to right: BM, Somin, Jiwoo, J.Seph
KARD is the only co-ed group that I listen to that is still together and making music. They debuted in 2017, but they also had pre-debut tracks released throughout 2016 and 2017 before they officially debuted. KARD recently had their first comeback in nearly two years with their 5th Mini album Re:.
Break Down
This is the first, and my favorite, b-side track from KARD’s new album. It’s more of a “toxic-love story” kind of song. That’s not a concept that I see done very often in K-Pop, though, and I really enjoy it.

Ring the Alarm
This is the title track from the group’s most recent album, and it’s definitely very catchy. It’s got a sort of Latin/Spanish feel to it like a lot of KARD’s music does, and I really enjoy it. This group never disappoints me with their title tracks.

This song is a very summer-y b-side track from KARD’s recent album. It’s all in English, and it’s just one of those songs that makes you want to vibe and have fun while driving around with friends during the summer.

Sunmi (선미)

Sunmi is a long-time idol in the K-Pop industry. She first debuted as a member of the group Wonder Girls under JYP Entertainment. She then took a break from the group and ended up debuting as a solo artist soon after returning to the group. She left JYP Entertainment in 2017 to join MakeUs Entertainment. Sunmi has been an active solo artist ever since, and she is one of my favorite idols in the industry. She recently released her single album, titled Heart Burn (열이 올라요).
Heart Burn (열이 올라요)
This is the title track of Sunmi’s most recent Single Album Heart Burn, or 열이 올라요 in Korean. This song is a very nostalgic sort of song about summer love, and it’s very catchy. Sunmi’s voice is such a calming one, and because of that, her songs always make me feel content.

Childhood
This song is the b-side track to Sunmi’s recent single album. It’s also got a sort of nostalgic, calming vibe to it, which as I mentioned, I really like. Sunmi’s voice just makes anything calming, so she could sing the alphabet, and I’d still feel calm.

IRRIS (아이리스)

From left to right: Yunseul, Liv, I.L, Nina
IRRIS, pronounced ‘Iris’ is a newly debuted girl group, having debuted in July of 2022 under Justice Records, a subsidiary of Taewon Entertainment and Mellow Entertainment. Their debut title track, Wanna Know, has a very early 2000’s/late 90’s feel, and it’s quite enjoyable to listen to.
Wanna Know
As previously stated, this song has a very late 90’s/early 00’s feel to me. I think it’s due to a combination of the instrumentals and the vocal techniques, but I can’t quite pinpoint it. Overall, I really like the song, though.

ITZY (있지)

From left to right: Yuna, Lia, Ryujin, Chaeryeong, Yeji
Itzy is a girl group under JYP Entertainment that debuted in February of 2019. The group recently released their 5th Mini Album Checkmate. This mini album has a total of six songs, as well as an English version of their title track Sneakers.
Sneakers
This is the title track of Itzy’s recent mini album. It has a very fun, bubbly vibe to it throughout the chorus. The verses and bridge, though, become a bit more elegant as the girls fully utilize their vocal skills. It’s very catchy, too.

Racer
This is one of the b-side tracks on Itzy’s new album. It’s very catchy, and was overall one of my favorite from the album. It has more of an intense and girl-crush-like feel than some of their other songs. It’s quite a contrast to the title track, but I love the confident vibes it gives.

Yet another one of Itzy’s b-side tracks that gives off a sort of “too cool for you” vibe. This one is more similar to the title track than Racer is, but it’s still good. I like it, but it’s not one of my favorites overall.

Free Fall
This song is definitely my favorite b-side track from this album, though I’m not exactly sure why. It gives me space vibes, which is likely due to a combination of the instrumentals and some of the lyrics (i.e. “riding through the galaxy”, “in your universe”, etc). Overall, I love how laid back the song is; it’s not too busy, and it’s not too boring.

This is another one of those songs on this album that just radiates confidence and self-assuredness. It’s essentially about how the narrator has been dumped, but they aren’t upset about it. Instead, they’re sort of dismissive about the situation, even saying, “you dumped me, pathetic” at one point in the song. I really enjoy these types of songs, as they make me feel confident as well.

Domino
This is the only slower, sentimental sort of song on this album. However, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, as it just makes it more special. I’ll admit, I wasn’t a fan of this song at first, but I quickly grew to like it. This song sort of talks about feeling the need to be strong for a loved one, but also knowing they’re there to give you a shoulder to cry on if needed. It’s essentially about being there for one another and knowing that you always have someone to help hold you up, which is really touching.

Chungha (청하)

Chungha is a popular solo artist under MNH Entertainment. She originally debuted in the girl group I.O.I. from Produce 101 Season 1. However, once the group disbanded, she debuted as a solo artist. Sparkling is the title track to her recent full-length album Bare & Rare Pt. 1.
Sparkling
As far as Chungha’s songs go, this definitely isn’t one of my favorites. I tend like her more girl-crush, less cutesy concepts. However, I genuinely really love Chungha, and I admire her quite a bit. It took a few listens, but the song did end up growing on me.

Billlie (빌리)

From left to right: Siyoon, Tsuki, Suhyeon, Sheon, Haram, Moon Sua, Haruna
No, I didn’t misspell the name of the group, there are really three l’s in their name. Billlie, formerly Mystic Rookies, is a girl group under Mystic Story Entertainment. The group originally debuted as six members in November of 2021, with member Sheon joining the group not long after. They released a collaboration song in July with Yoon Jong Shin (윤정신), titled Patbingsu.
Patbingsu (팥빙수)
This song is definitely not at all what I expected it to be. I’m not quite sure what I was expecting, but I remember being very surprised many times throughout my first listen of the song. Billlie is one of those groups that can pull off any concept, including cutesy concepts, which is exactly what this song is. The lyrics are seemingly about a summer-y food, called Patbingsu. Because I don’t normally like cutesy concepts, I wasn’t a huge fan of the song at first, but it did end up grow on me some.

The six-member girl group, STAYC (formerly HighUp Girls), is under High Up Entertainment. They’ve slowly gained popularity since their debut in late 2020, and they’re now fairly well-known. In July, they released their third single album, titled We Need Love.
Beautiful Monster
This title track has a sort of nostalgic feel to it, at least for me. It’s definitely one of my favorites of their title tracks, too. The vocals are amazing, and the choreography fits the song so well. STAYC never disappoints.

This is the first b-side track from the We Need Love album, and it has a sort of summery feel to it. It’s very laid back, and it definitely radiates positve vibes. It’s sort of acoustic in the way that the most noticable instrument in the background is a guitar, which I quite like.

HyunA (현아)

HyunA is arguably one of the most iconic, prominent soloists in the K-Pop industry. She debuted in the group Wonder Girls, but she ended up leaving due to her parents’ concern for her health. HyunA was also a member of the groups 4Minute, TroubleMaker and, Triple H. She debuted as a solo artist in 2010 with the song Change under CUBE Entertainment. After leaving CUBE Ent. in 2018, she joined singer PSY’s company P Nation. However, she left P Nation a couple of months ago. Before her departure from the company, she released her EP, titled Nabillera, with a title track of the same name.
Nabillera (나빌레라)
Nabillera is a very catchy song, fitting with HyunA’s style. It’s sort of summer-y, but more in the sense that it’s carefree and fun. I wasn’t sure about it at first, but it quickly grew on me, becoming one of my favorite songs from tis playlist to just have fun and dance to.

Bebe Rexha

I don’t normally listen to Bebe Rexha except for the songs I occasionally hear on social media or the radio. I do genuinely enjoy her music that I have heard, though, especially her song Home with Machine Gun kelly and X Ambassadors. She has a very unique voice, and she’s very talented, so when I found out two of my favorite K-Pop idols would be collaborating with her, I was very excited.
Break My Heart Myself feat. Yeji (예지) and Ryujin (류진) of Itzy (있지)
I first heard this song through Yeji and Ryujin of Itzy’s Mix & Max video on YouTube where they danced to it. I’m not sure who choreographed the dance, but they both executed it very well, and I fell in love with the lyrics of the song. Later, it was announced that they would be releasng a version of this song with Yeji and Ryujin along with original singer Bebe Rexha, though the lyrics of this version of the song are a bit different from the original. The song itself is about bipolar disorder, which Bebe Rexha has struggled with. I know quite a bit about bipolar disorder from past and recent research, so when I first listened to the lyrics, I was almost immediately able to pinpoint what the song was about. Overall, I just really love this song.

Top 5 Favorites
So, I decided to choose a top five songs from this playlist. However, they will not be based on the average scores I gave them but rather my own personal preference. I genuinely love every song on this playlist though, otherwise they would not be here. This made choosing five favorites really difficult, but here goes nothing.
- Break My Heart Myself by Bebe Rexha feat. Yeji and Ryujin of Itzy: this song is probably my favorite solely because of the message it sends. I love when songs help raise awareness for mental health, and the fact that it features two of my favorite K-Pop idols only adds to my love for it.
- No Problem by Nayeon feat. Felix of Stray Kids: I love the simplicity of this song and the fact that it’s completely in English. Not only does it tell a nice story, but it also has a member of my favorite K-Pop group, Stray Kids, featured in it.
- Break Down by KARD: I love that Jiwoo and Somin both use their lower registers in this song. BM and J.Seph’s raps also fit the overall vibe of song very well, only adding to the bitter heartbreak feel of it.
- Free Fall by Itzy: This is overall my favorite song from Itzy’s Checkmate album. I really enjoy listening and just jamming out to this song, so I felt I had to add it to this list.
- Life’s Too Short by aespa: Once again, I love the overall message of this song, as it’s definitely relevant to today’s generation. I’m usually a fan of slower songs anyway, so the fact that this song is slower only adds to my love for it.
Until the Next Monthly Review
Finally, I’ve reached the end of this post. Not only did the cumulative time I worked on this add up to be quite a bit, but it was spread out over a period of five months. I debated just scrapping this post since it’s no longer anywhere close to July, but I had already put so much time into it that it felt wrong to get rid of it. I’m really glad I decided to keep it though, as it was really fun rating some of these songs.
My first semester of college is the main reason it took me so long to finish this post. Not only was I adjusting to college life, but I was also taking pretty difficult classes. I just had a lot going on, so I didn’t really have time to work on my blog at all. As of right now, I still need to update my blog’s theme, as it’s still centered around books. While I do enjoy the current theme, there are at least a few things I need to change so that it’s obvious that this isn’t just a book blog anymore.
I’ll try to post more frequently than I have been. I’ve really missed posting and talking about the things I love. I’m not taking classes that are as difficult next semester, and I’ve become accustomed to college life, so I should have more time to work on posts. I’m not quite sure what my next post will be about, but it’s likely going to be some sort of playlist/album review again, a post about my favorite TV show Doctor Who, or a post about my all-time favorite K-Pop group, Stray Kids. Please be patient with me and stay tuned as I continue to grow my blog!
